Sen. Brownie Carson, D-Harpswell, has been appointed to the Maine Climate Council by Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash.
“Climate change poses a dire threat to our future — as of this year, there is more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere than at any other point in human history,” said Carson in a news release. “Establishing the Maine Climate Council is a tremendous step forward, and I’m honored to be appointed to it. Together, we will work to reduce greenhouse gas pollution by 80 percent and achieve 100 percent renewable energy by 2050.”
The Maine Climate Council is charged with developing action plans to reduce Maine’s greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050; increase Maine’s Renewable Portfolio Standard from 40 percent today to 80 percent in 2030 and 100 percent in 2050; create new incentives for energy-efficient heating, and institute new solar incentive programs.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
