The coastal snowstorm was peaking around 12:20 p.m. today, and forecasters expected it to drop a couple of inches more than initially expected.

Butch Roberts said the storm is generally following the same track and moving at the same speed as forecast, but is hugging the coastline slightly more than computer models earlier this morning suggested.

In addition to creating a little more snow in general, that track is also causing heavier than anticipated snow inland, he said.

Totals from shortly after 11 a.m. range from 7.5 inches in Brunswick to nearly 12 inches in Gorham, Roberts said, and snow is continuing to fall heavily.

South coastal Maine is expected to see about 10 to 18 inches of snow, he said, and about the same in the coastal plain. The foothills should get 6 to 12 inches.

The storm is still expected to start winding down this afternoon with the snow tapering off toward nightfall, he said. About an inch of snow is expected to fall tonight as the storm departs, Robert said.
