SACO — The Margaret Murphy Centers for Children celebrated the grand opening of its new school on April 13, at 60 Industrial Park Road, Saco. The new school will serve students ages 3 to 20 who cannot access the range or intensity of services needed in their public schools. MMCC, primarily located in the Lewiston-Auburn area, opened its first state -approved special purpose program in 2000 with three students. Sixteen years later, it has expanded to nine sites, and serves nearly 170 students. Saco is its first venture outside of the central Maine area. We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
