BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College volleyball team extended its win streak to eight

consecutive matches with a 3-0 win over visiting WPI on Saturday.

The Polar Bears are 12-6, while the Engineers fell to 12-9.

Bowdoin took the win in straight sets, going 25-18, 25-13, 25-23.

The teams traded points through the opening of the first set until Bowdoin went on a 4-0 run to make it 14-8 and generate some space. The Engineers again traded points with the Polar Bears to pull within three at 19-16 before the Polar pulled out a 6-2 run.

Bowdoin jumped out to an 8-2 lead to take control of the second set. WPI pulled within four, 12-8, but was unable to close the gap further.

The teams played a tight third set. Bowdoin went ahead 16-9, but a 6-1 run off Amanda Wetmore’s serve kept WPI within striking distance, pulling the visitors within two.  A series of serves from Colleen Mullins pulled the Engineers even with Bowdoin for the first time in the set (20-20). With the Polar Bears leading 24-21, WPI staved off a pair of match points to pull within one. Sophia Pahl ended the day with a match winning kill.

Caroline Flaharty had a match-high 12 kills for Bowdoin, with Kate Kiser recording 20 assists and Ella Haugen 18. Emily King led both teams with 11 digs.

Bowdoin swept past Endicott on Friday by a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-21).

Flaharty surpassed 1,000 digs for her career and became just the third Polar Bear in program history (Gillian Page, Melissa Haskell) with 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. She also had 11 kills in the victory.

Ashley Williams also had 10 kills for Bowdoin, while King finished with 13 digs for Bowdoin. Haugen dished out 20 assists to pace the Polar Bears, who got six blocks from Cori Gray.

The Polar Bears play at Middlebury on October 25 at 7:00 p.m.

Women’s soccer

Bowdoin swept a pair of weekend matches. 

On Sunday at Bates College in Lewiston, Bowdoin captured a 2-0 NESCAC victory over the Bobcats, improving the Polar Bears to 6-6-1 overall, 2-5-1 in the NESCAC. 

Bates (2-10-1, 0-8 NESCAC) first-year goalie Elizabeth Crawford made two early saves, but Bowdoin broke through when Jamie Lau one-timed a shot just underneath the crossbar for a 1-0 halftime lead. 

The Polar Bears doubled their lead in the 66th minute when Lynn Farquhar cleaned up a rebound of a shot from Morgan Gallagher for her second goal of the season. 

Bowdoin finished with a 22-9 shot advantage, with Crawford making seven saves for Bates. Polar Bear netminder Penny Rocchio made two stops for the shutout.

On Saturday in Brunswick, Bowdoin erupted for five goals in the second half en route to a 6-0 win over Maine Maritime Academy. 

Gallagher, Talia Missan (two goals), Annie Pyne (two goals) and Ali Dougal scored for the Polar Bears, who host Williams on Saturday at noon. 

Women’s rugby

Vassar rallied for a 32-24 victory over Bowdoin on Saturday on Pickard Field in Brunswick. 

The Polar Bears saw their four-match win streak come to an end as they faell to 5-2 this season.

Bowdoin led 24-15 after Ashlynn Autrey scored on a penalty play.

However, the visitors mounted a comeback, taking advantage of costly Bowdoin mistakes for a pair of tries for a 25-24 lead with two minutes remaining. 

The Polar Bears regained possession, but a penalty turned the ball over and Vassar finished things off seconds before the final whistle. 

Bowdoin will look to rebound this weekend as the Polar Bears head to Biddeford to battle in-state rival University of New England at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Football

Tufts rolled to a 49-0 victory over Bowdoin on Saturday at Medford, Massachusetts. 

The Jumbos improved to 3-3, while the Polar Bears fell to 0-6 and host Middlebury this upcoming Saturday at 1 p.m.

The teams played a scoreless opening quarter as the Polar Bears racked up three sacks in the early going to stymie the Jumbo offense.

Tufts hit its stride with a 21-point second quarter to take command before halftime, scoring twice on long touchdown passes from Jacob Caroll to OJ Armstrong to take a 21-0 edge at the break.

The hosts added 14 points in the third and fourth quarters. 

Tufts finished with 662 total yards of offense. Bowdoin was able to muster only 181 yards of offense and 11 first downs on the afternoon.

Jacob Carroll went 12-of-23 for 325 yards passing and three TDs for Tufts. 

Bowdoin was led by 143 yards passing by Matthew Marcantano, with Brendan Ward pacing the Polar Bears with five catches for 65 yards.

Joe Gowetski made a team-high 11 tackles for Bowdoin.
