SACO — Thornton Academy’s boys and girls tennis teams won their Class A South quarterfinal matches at home on Thursday afternoon.

The top-seeded boys swept No. 8 Westbrook 5-0, while the No. 4 girls beat No. 5 Windham 4-1.

TA’s Dariy Vykhodtsev and Viktor Schwarz cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins in their singles matches against Garett Sanders and Danny Porell, while Jack Xiao won his match 6-1, 6-1 over Dylan Ho.

Asher Thompson and Adam Lovejoy won their doubles match over Elijah Doucette and Adam Blackmore 6-2, 6-4, while Simon Belliveau and Jackson Dohse topped Jameson Valdron and Chris LaRose 6-2, 6-0.

TA boys coach Andrew Carlson was happy with his team’s outing against an opponent that has grown during the course of the year.

“I just think we were efficient, we saw Westbrook earlier in the season, same result, but I think Westbrook has made some big improvements. I was impressed with the development of their players … they’ve come a long way. We knew that, but at the same time we knew that if we came in and did what we do we would be fine today,” said Carlson.

TA improves to a perfect 13-0 overall record, however Carlson still sees room for improvement heading down the stretch.

“We just need to be cleaner, we need to be cleaner from the get-go, have a higher serve percentage. Some of that is just trying not to do too much, sometimes you need to remind them, ‘listen, have confidence in your ability … get your serve in, play the point, make your opponent hit winners and don’t give them free points.’ That’ll be the key as we progress,” said Carlson.

The Trojans will be squaring off against Portland on Saturday, and Carlson feels his team is prepared.

“This is good for us … it gives us an opportunity to maybe get some nerves out heading into Saturday … we will be ready,” said Carlson.

Despite winning 4-1, the TA girls had their hands full with Windham.

TA’s Eva Sachs won her singles match 6-4, 6-2 over Sarah Rich, while Andrea Kucharova grinded out a 7-5, 6-2 win over Sarah Webb. Grace Pickering fell in her match against Maelah Nadeau, 6-2, 7-6.

Emma Nassif and Cordelia Perry beat Taylor Everett and Paige Laferriere in a hard-fought doubles match 6-4, 6-2. Pilar Salcedo and Claudia de la Hoz Garcia won 6-1, 6-3 versus Anna Cancelarich and Kiana Clark.

TA girls coach Dan Frost was impressed with Windham’s effort.

“I think Windham did a lot of things well, they’re a great team with a lot of great players. The close matches went our way, but there were tough battles all the way to the end,” said Frost.

Looking ahead, Frost hopes his team will continue to build on its already impressive season.

“We need to be sure we are playing our game moving forward and so far it’s been all good. We’ve been psyched with the season so far, but we need to go through the playoffs swinging,” said Frost. “Having momentum is definitely big, especially since all these teams are playing to win, it’s good.”

The TA girls will also play on Saturday against the winner of No. 1 Falmouth/No. 8 Deering.
