SCARBOROUGH — Thornton Academy senior Dan Smith and Kennebunk freshman Abbey Leonardi were rewarded for their stellar regular seasons and then went out and lived up to their billing as the top two outdoor track and field athletes at Saturday’s Southwestern championships at Mitchell Sports Complex.

Leonardi won both the 800 (2:17.68) and 1600-meter (4:59.55) runs, and Smith took the discus and missed the league’s record by a single inch in winning the shot put. His 59-foot, 1-inch heave was just shy of Ed Bogdonavich’s 1977 record.
