BIDDEFORD — Clarence T. Belanger, 87, of Biddeford, died surrounded by family members on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at St. Andre’s Health Care Facility in Biddeford after a brief illness.

He was born March 21, 1929, in Connor Plantation, the son of Edward and Dora Beaulieu Belanger. He was educated in Biddeford schools, and graduated from Biddeford High School.

On June 25, 1949, he married Rita S. Frenette in St. Joseph Church. They made their home and raised their three children on Marcel Avenue in Biddeford. She died after 42 years of marriage on July 11, 1991.

In 1946, Mr. Belanger joined the Maine National Guard and later transferred to the Army Reserves, where he served for 43 years. He worked as a military civil defense advisor for York County for three years.

He then worked for more than 20 years with Bates and Pepperell Manufacturing, and last worked for 26 years as a patrolman with the Biddeford Police Department, retiring in 1995.

Clarence was a member of the Veterans Alliance of Biddeford and the Biddeford American Legion. He was active for many years on the board of directors for York County Fish & Game in Lyman. He also taught gun safety for youth groups.

Clarence had many hobbies. He enjoyed woodworking and stained glass projects. He also had a passion for building model ships from different eras to pass the time during the long winter months in Florida.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernice Marsh and Hazel Allard, both of Biddeford.

He is survived by: two daughters, Linda Ridlon and her husband Maurice of Lyman, and Jo Ann Stearns and her husband Richard Jr. of Lyman; one son, Thomas T. Belanger and his wife Deborah of Lyman; two brothers, Nelson Belanger of Million Hills, California, and Robert Belanger of Bakersfield, California; two sisters, Joan Gagne of Presque Isle and Jeannette Turmelle of Kissimmee, Florida; six grandchildren, Melissa, Shawn, Shannon, Sheryl, Sarah and Kristen; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, July 18, at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, at St. Joseph Church in Biddeford. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Biddeford.
