I’m a Portland volunteer driver for Independent Transportation Network (ITN), a nonprofit whose mission is to free those who cannot drive from being trapped in their homes.

I’ve driven stroke victims to physical therapy. I drove a blind man and his guide dog home from a veterinarian. I’ve driven a legally blind man to his job. And I’ve driven seniors to their doctor’s office and to hospitals.

Although many trips are provided to bring members for medical reasons, a trip to a hairdresser or any other trip is equally within ITN’s mission.

I have a Saco friend in her 80s who is no longer able to drive, and is dependent upon a wonderful 94-year-old friend for transportation. When will they each need ITN?

My goal? To expand ITNPortland into Biddeford, Saco and OOB. This will require finding 30 volunteer local area drivers and raising a $10,000 donation to ITN. Can you visualize young retirees helping those who cannot drive? People helping people.

For 20 years, ITNPortland volunteers have been driving those who cannot. Will you help us find local volunteer drivers so ITN can expand into Saco-Biddeford and OOB?

Get a great feeling of satisfaction by helping those who cannot drive. ITN trains its drivers. Sacoarea residents frequently call ITN for transportation, but ITN has no drivers in the Saco Area. Please volunteer.
