SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A retired Texas doctor and veteran pilot who flew for Israel during its war of independence has died at 92.
Nathan Narboni died of natural causes Saturday at his San Antonio home.
Narboni, whose nickname was “Gino,” was born to a Jewish family in Algeria. He put his medical studies on hold to become a pilot in the French air force.
He later would be honored for his role as a member of the “Mahal,” a group of volunteers who helped in Israel’s War of Independence from 1947 to 1949.
Narboni would also serve in the U.S. Air Force.
He later worked as an oncologist in San Antonio for 19 years.
His wife, Charlotte Narboni, says her husband lived his life with gentle dignity and no fanfare about his accomplishments.
