ARUNDEL — A fire off Drew’s Mills Road off Route 111 on Monday night was in an area so thickly wooded that firefighters had to drag in hoses the last 600 to 700 feet. The fire is currently under investigation by the Maine Forest Service.

Arundel Deputy Fire Chief Renald Tardif said firefighters discovered a charcoal grill and a ring of stones near the fire and are looking into whether those items may have played a role in the incident.

“We think there may have been someone in there this weekend,” he said.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at around 6 p.m. Tardif said the fire consumed just over an acre, but getting to it to extinguish the blaze was rough going.

“Access incredibly hard along the power lines, “ he said. “We couldn’t get to it, we had to hand carry everything in, we had to drag lines in, we couldn’t get trucks to it.”

Firefighters ferried water by tanker, and laid hose lines to the scene.

There were several all terrain vehicles to assist, but there was no ready access even with those at their disposal, Tardif said.

Assisting Arundel in fighting the fire were firefighters from Biddeford, Saco, Goodwins Mills, Kenenbunk, Kennebunkport, Alfred and Wells.

No one was injured, Tardif said.

Firefighters were able to wind down the operation at about 9:30 p.m.

Smoke from the fire could be seen in nearby neighborhoods Monday night.
