BIDDEFORD — It was a day’s work for Biddeford’s hockey squad that even Ernie Banks would likely have appreciated.
Playing two, and winning them both.
The Tigers pulled a double shift in the Maine High School Hockey Invitational, and were rewarded with a pair of hefty wins for their efforts.
Fueled by Trevor Fleurent’s four goal output, Biddeford 11-1 humbling of Hampton (N.B.) in a morning affair at Biddeford Ice Arena.
Fleurent scored twice more, and picked up assists on two goals by his younger brother Brady, as the Tigers sank Berlin (N.H.), 6-2, in an evening affair.
If the Tigers were forced to fight off fatigue as the day wore on, they weren’t showing.
We’re thinking about it, either.
“(We) just go as hard as possible, every shift,” said winger Scott Callahan, who scored twice against Hampton. “We don’t conserve any energy in games.”
Berlin presented the Tigers with the tougher of the two tests.
Even so, Biddeford was able to roll up a 4-0 lead via two goals late in the first period, and two more in the second.
“We played some good teams,” said Biddeford coach Rich Reissfelder. “That’s probably the best thing about this tournament. You see teams you don’t normally see. I thought we responded really well both games.”
Fleurent got the Tigers going at 13:46, when he backhanded in his own rebound.
Just 1:09 later, Craig Anton deposited a wraparound while the Tigers operated a power play to make it 2-0.
“We try to play these games exactly the way we play regular season games,” said Callahan. “There’s not holding back or anything. We try to put these teams in their place, too.”
Biddeford allowed the Mountaineers to creep back to within 4-2 within the opening 3:30 of the third period.
However, goals by Brady Fleurent and Derek Reny put the game out of reach.
In the morning tilt, the Tigers trailed Hampton 1-0 after the first period, then blitzed the Huskies with six unanswered goals in the second.
Tyson Nadeau scored twice while Ethan Pratt, Brady Fleurent both notched single scores.
Biddeford is now off until Saturday, when they’ll meet Kennebunk at BIA.
