An Essex Street home was damaged by a slow, smoky fire Sunday evening.

Portland Fire Department Chief David Jackson said no one was at home at the single-family home at 96 Essex St. when a neighbor noticed smoke emanating from the building at about 6:30 p.m.

Jackson said the fire damaged the kitchen floor and a few wall partitions. He said it appeared the fire had been burning for some time. The cause has not yet been determined. It took about an hour to completely extinguish it.

Jackson said no one was hurt.
