Beth Strassler, of Arundel, received her master’s degree in Jewish Studies during graduation ceremonies at Hebrew College, Newton Centre, Massachusetts, on June 5.
During the coming year, Strassler will work to complete the required competency examinations in order to be ordained as a cantor. She is presently a cantorial soloist and lay leader at Congregation Etz Chaim at 36 Bacon St. in Biddeford.
In order to conclude her studies for the degree, Strassler completed her thesis titled “The Life Story and Music of Dr. Morton Gold.” The thesis includes a biographical study of Gold and analyses of his musical style.
A resident of Springvale, Gold’s repertoire includes works he has conducted for the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Portland Symphony Orchestra. Strassler took a special interest in his Jewish music compositions, which he wrote in classical form while incorporating traditional Jewish synagogue and folk motifs.
Strassler was the vocal soloist at a June 11 concert of Gold’s music held at the Sanford/Springvale Historical Society in Springvale.
