LEWISTON — You’ve got to give it up to the Beak Squad.
They know a most valuable performance when they see one.
The Beakers shouted out three little letters at the top of their lungs when Biddeford goalie Matt Roy skated out to receive his state championship medal, after having backstopped the Tigers to the title, Saturday.
“MVP”.
Not in the official sense, since, unlike the NHL and its Conn Smythe Trophy, the MPA doesn’t single out a player for playoff excellence.
But the yeoman work Roy performed in the Tigers’ net, especially in the two most important games of the year, were certainly Conn worthy.
The Beakers knew it.
His Tiger mates, knew it, too.
“He’s probably the reason why we won this (championship) game,” said defenseman Joe White. “I remember two times when he just completely robbed Waterville. He played a huge role on this team.
“Without him, we wouldn’t be here.”
For the record, Roy spun back-to-back shutouts – both identical 3-0 scores ”“ in the final two games of his high school career.
The first came against arch rivals Thornton Academy – for whom he played as a freshman – in the Western Maine Championship game.
And of course, the second, a 31-save gem, came against a ferocious Waterville club intent on hanging on to its state crown.
Talk about leaving the stage on a high note; Roy ends his high school days with a shutout span of 104:44, and having flawlessly handled the final 67 shots fired at him.
“The two most important games he’s played in,” said Biddeford coach Rich Reissfelder, “and not a single puck gets by him.”
Hearing the cheers and celebrating in an on-ice Tiger pile, the way champions do, was something he dreamed might happen last fall, when he transferred to Biddeford from Cheverus.
Dreamed for, but dared not hoped for.
“We kind of joked about it, a little bit,” said Roy. “I knew we had a great team from the get-go. It feels great that we finally did it.”
