EVANSTON, Ill. — Five local students are among the 3,000 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship

The local students receiving scholarships include: Mai R. Mangin of Buxton, who received the National Merit University of Alabama scholarship and is planning a career in social science; Nina M. Dashti-Gibson of Eliot, who received the National Merit Franklin and Marshall College scholarship and plans to study neuroscience; Amy E. Eckland of Kennebunk, who received the National Merit Northwestern University scholarship and is planning a career in epidemiology; Tristan R. Falardeau of Saco, who received the National Merit Bowdoin College scholarship and is planning to study neuroscience; and Alanna J. Haslam of Saco, who received the National Merit Bowdoin College scholarship and is planning a career in mathematics.
