SACO — Not much has gone wrong for the Kennebunk field hockey team lately, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
The Rams proved that on Wednesday, taking down Thornton Academy 3-0.
Kennebunk (4-2-1) dominated ball control through most of the game, keeping pressure on the Thornton side of the field. The Golden Trojans chances to score were few and far between, and Rams goalie Kelsey Livermore needed only four saves to collect the shutout.
“We’ve really been working on that small game control, and definitely our passing,” Kennebunk head coach Kayla Hinkley said. “Finding the players to transition the ball to, we’ve done a lot of that.”
Kennebunk took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, when Cheyenne Knox knocked a shot past Thornton goalie Abbey Siulinski. The score would stay that way until halftime.
The Rams kept the pressure on in the second half. Kennebunk captain Molly Centore smacked a loose that whistled past Siulinski into the goal midway through the half to take a 2-0 lead. With five minutes to play, Emily Vieira snuck a shot past Siulinski to seal the 3-0 win.
“We’re definitely working on scoring and capitalizing on balls that are coming off of goalie’s pads, because that’s an area we’re not so strong in right now,” Hinkley said. “We definitely did that today. That goal that Molly had, she was right there and she did a great job. So that’s the area that we’ve definitely been working on, and it showed today more than any other day. All the pieces fit today, which was really nice because that hadn’t happened yet.”
As of Wednesday night, the Rams are ranked 4th in the MPA Heal Point standings, with only Cheverus, Scarborough and Massabesic ahead of them. The Rams have the luck of an easy schedule from now until they play the Mustangs on Oct. 6. Of the games before Massabesic, only Bonny Eagle, at 3-3, could be a potential challenge.
The Trojans (4-2-1) are currently 7th in the Heal Point standings, but are being decimated by injuries. Both Mary Brown and Michele Banville, two of Thornton’s top players, were unable to play in the game. Brown could be back within the week, while Banville may miss the rest of the season due to torn hip flexor. In Wednesday’s game, Thornton went from 22 to 15 available players for the contest. The Trojans also have a tough schedule ahead of them, as they play at Sanford (4-3) on Friday and at Massabesic (5-3) on Sept. 28. The Trojans finish the year against 1st place Cheverus.
“We got lucky, because they snuck by us [offensively],” Hinkley said of Thornton. “But I thought they did a great job and they’re going to do well this season.”
Kennebunk hits the road to play against Portland on Friday.
