WELLS — There’s no more worry in Wells.

Any concern there was regarding the Wells football team entering the Western Class B quarterfinal game against York on Friday night quickly vanished minutes into the third quarter.

The Warriors racked up 262 yards of offense in the second half, and finished with 441 on the night, and in the process steam rolled over their rivals 42-7 at Warrior Memorial Field.

“All I said, was, if there’s a football God out there, please help us,” Wells head coach Tim Roche said. “And he did.”

Wells (9-0), the No. 1 seed, will host Westbrook (5-4), the No. 5 seed, in the semifinal round on Nov. 4.

Warriors starting quarterback Paul McDonough, who was questionable with a foot injury that had kept him out for the past two weeks, returned, but it was overshadowed by the play of backfield mates Louis DiTomasso, Doug McLean and Drew Shelley. The trio accounted for 341 yards on the ground.

The Warriors’ defense also had a successful night, holding the Wildcats to 154 yards of total offense, and just 36 in the second half. Wells beat York two weeks in a row, picking up a 26-21 win last week.

“We just couldn’t finish,” York head coach Randy Small said. “We couldn’t seem to get the break and turn the tide. (Wells) got the break and turned the tide.”

DiTomasso, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards on the season with his performance, led all rushers on the night with 139 yards on 16 caries and scored two touchdowns.

“Louis gets no credit,” Roche said. “He started awesome. He had 246 yards rushing last week, and I don’t see him anywhere in the paper. He had 800 yards rushing in eight games and 15 TDs. He’s the best football player in the Campbell Conference, in my mind. I know I’m biased, but that’s the way it is.”

DiTomasso shrugged off any credit.

“I’m just trying to work,” DiTomasso said. “I’m just trying to get to Portland (for the state championship game).”

DiTomasso scored the first touchdown of the contest in the first quarter when he broke down the right side of the field on a 40-yard romp into the end zone. A Joey Spinelli extra point gave the Warriors a 7-0 lead.

York tied the game with its only touchdown of the night early in the second quarter, when tight end Austin Wallace caught a 14-yard pass from quarterback Ross Hogan. The extra point from Benjamin Lawlor brought the score to 7-7.

The Warriors took back the lead with nine minutes left in the half. McDonough, avoiding a rush, threw the ball deep down the field. York safety Joe Galante slipped, allowing Zach Deshaies to be wide open and catch McDonough’s pass, completing the 62-yard scoring toss. Spinelli’s extra point made the game 14-7 in Wells’ favor, where it remained until halftime.

The Warriors turned on the afterburners in the second half. Offensively, the Warriors continued to rely on the success of the run game. DiTomasso scored once again on a 16-yard romp, with the extra point bringing the score to 21-7. McLean, who finished with 109 yards on nine carries, scored the next touchdown, on a 26-yard run.

Shelley scored the next touchdown for Wells, a 6-yard touchdown plunge, and McLean scored on the two-point conversion, giving the Warriors a 35-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. Shelley rushed for 93 yards on the night on nine carries.

The Warriors finished off the scoring with five seconds remaining in the game, when Shelley returned a Wallace fumble 22 yards for a touchdown. Spinelli’s extra point sealed the 42-7 score.

“Our coaches are great, we made great second half adjustments,” DiTomasso said. “We just played our brand of football and pounded the rock. And we took advantage of (York’s) turnovers. We just played good football in the second half.”

Wells never committed a turnover in the contest, while forcing four turnovers on York. Hogan threw three interceptions on the night, including two that were picked off by Spinelli.

“This is Roche’s year,” Small said. “I just told him, I hope they win it all.”

There’s still three games to go. But the Warriors are well on their way.
