WELLS — The good news just keeps coming for the Wells High School football team.

Gatorade today named fullback Louis DiTomasso the Gatorade Maine Football Player of the Year.

He is the first Gatorade Maine Football Player of the Year from Wells.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes DiTomasso as Maine’s best high school football player.

The 6-foot, 180-pound senior, who also played linebacker, led the Warriors to 12-0 record and their first Class B state championship since 1997. He rushed for 1,559 yards and 18 touchdowns on 203 carries.

In addition, DiTomasso was also named the Campbell Conference Player of the Year and is a semifinalist for the 2011 Fitzpatrick award, given to Maine’s best senior football player.

On defense, DiTomasso made 133 tackles, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and blocked a field goal. In the state title game, he ran for 134 yards and a touchdown in the win against Leavitt.

“Louis DiTomasso has great instincts at linebacker and flied to the play,” said Westbrook football coach Jeff Guerrette, according to a prepared statement from Gatorade. “At the point of attack, he is extremely physical and consistently delivers the blow.”

He has maintained a B-plus average and is an avid photographer and artist. He has also volunteered locally as a youth football coach.

DiTomasso has not yet said what college he plans to attend.

DiTomasso joins recent Gatorade Maine Football Players of the Year Peter Gwilym (2010, Cheverus), Jack Mallis (2009, Windham), Jack Heary (2008, Deering) and Justin Villaci (2007, Gorham).
