SACO- Right from the get-go the Thornton Academy girls soccer team peppered shots at the net. Eventually ball found net, and then found it again, then found it once more as the Trojans beat Falmouth 3-0 in a preseason soccer game at Hill Stadium.

The outcome was secondary for head coach Chris Kohl, who was more excited about how they got the win.

“The results are nice, and it’s great that we won. But in the end, it’s all about preparation for our first game,” said Kohl.

It only took two minutes for Tori Daigle to get the first shot on net. Daigle found herself in that position often during the first half, but was denied each time.

The Trojans finally did get one to go in late in the half, as Courtney O’Brien hit Alyssa Gilbert with a cross from the left side. Gilbert had an easy tap in from the back post for the game’s first goal.

“They’re doing a great job of working together as a team. They’re working as one unit. It’s been great to see,” said Kohl. “This is was the best we’ve played all preseason. So it’s good to see us kind of getting our rhythm.”

The Trojans scored two more goals early in the second half. Daigle finally got a shot to go in, booting it over the goalie’s head from the top of the 18 eight minutes in. Amanda Arnold then scored seven minutes later on a shot from the right side.

“It was great to see a lot of great opportunities, great runs. A lot of different people getting involved, not just one person,” said Kohl. “We have many forwards who can get involved, many people who can put the ball in the back of the net. No one really cares who does it, they just want to have someone do it.”

The game was the last in the preseaon for Thornton Academy, and Kohl is just glad he and the team can start preparing for games that really count.

“We’ve had a really good preseason,” said Kohl. “We’ve played a lot of scrimmages here in the last week. Now our focus is getting ready for our season opener.”
