LEWISTON — The puck didn’t bounce Biddeford’s way as it lost a scrappy battle to Lewiston Saturday night at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, 2-0.

“Playing a team like Lewiston you know it’s going to be a physical game. They’re big, fast and real strong kids. We certainly had plenty of opportunities, but we just didn’t get a bounce,” said Biddeford coach Rich Reissfelder.

Biddeford goalie Jon Fields had 24 saves, stuffing nine power-play shots by Lewiston (2-1).

“I think Fields is one of the best goalies in the state,” said Reissfelder. “He earns that reputation game in and game out. When he is seeing the puck he is tough to beat. Tonight he did a good job of limiting their second chances.”

Lewiston out shot Biddeford 10-4 in the first period, but no goals were scored. Biddeford stopped Lewiston on its first power-play attempt, waving off three shots. In the second period, Biddeford out shot Lewiston 5-4, but a puck slipped by Fields as Patrick DeBlois went top-shelf unassisted for the first goal of the game. Fields had the puck stopped, but it trickled off his pads and fell across the line for the score.

“At the half we talked about having a sense of urgency. Down 1-0 in the third period it wasn’t like we were in a bad spot,” said Reissfelder.

Lewiston had the advantage shooting in the third with 10 shots to Biddeford’s five as the aggressive style of both teams picked up. All of Biddeford’s shots came off power plays. Matt Poulin scored the final goal for Lewiston on a put back from a rebound off Fields’ pads.

“The first goal they got a bad break, the second goal we had blown coverage. Other than that it was a hell of a hockey game,” said Reissfelder.

Biddeford had its opportunities in the third period as it drew four power-play opportunities. But the penalty killing of Lewiston was too good and constantly knocked the puck into Biddeford’s zone.

Biddeford (1-1) has a week before playing its next game on Saturday as it takes on Cape Elizabeth (1-1-1) in its home opener in Biddeford.
