WINDHAM — The Massabesic wrestling team got a welcome challenge on Wednesday night, as Windham gave the Mustangs some stiff competition during a meet at Windham High School.
While Massabesic eventually won the match, taking seven of the nine matches that were held, the Eagles showed that they were ready from the get-go.
“Windham did come out on fire,” said Massabesic head coach Rick DeRosier. “I mean they came out, and their kids wrestled tough and hard.”
DeRosier said he was glad his team got to face an opponent like Windham, who he said competed hard in every match.
“It’s good, because that’s how it should be,” DeRosier said of wrestlers getting right out on the mat and ready to go.
Windham took the first two matches of the night, as Jake Hodgkins pinned Jordan Drain in the 285-pound class, and Sam Frank pinned Adam Blaisdell in the 106-pound match.
But from there, it was all Massabesic. The Mustangs took the final seven matches against the Eagles, with three going the full three rounds.
Mike Aboud got the first win for Massabesic, as he got a first-period pin on Gabe Curtis-Brown in the 113-pound match. Tyler Everett followed that up with a first-period pin of his own, besting Brandon Huntington in the 126-pound match.
Nick Staples and Trevor Burns also pinned their opponents for wins. Staples beat in T.J. Kenney early in the second period of the 132-pound match, and Burns finished Matt Fayah before the end of the first period in the 152-pound match.
Maybe the best match of the night came in the 145-pound clash between Massabesic’s Logan Martin and Windham’s Dalton Mauro. Mauro came out strong to start the match, but Martin, just a freshman, kept fighting. Martin gained the upper hand as the match wore on, and gained a narrow victory at the end.
Martin said after the match that he let an opportunity to pin Mauro slip away, showing his relative youth.
“I thought I did well. I should have pinned him in the second period. I had his shoulders down, and I shouldn’t have let him back up,” said Martin.
Still, Martin said he was happy to get the win, especially after such a hard-fought match.
“I was excited at the end. I really was,” said Martin.
DeRosiers said matches like the one Martin was in are the reason the fans come out, and what make wrestling so enjoyable.
“Those are nice to watch, sitting (watching) film or in the stands,” said DeRosiers.
Zach Richard’s 138-pound win preceded Martin’s match, and in similar fashion. Josh Andrews finished off the meet with a win at 220 pounds over Christian Coons. Andrews had Coons where he wanted him a couple times, but had to settle for a win on points.
Bruce Hill lost his match against Greely’s Nick Vogel at 160 pounds. Vogel, who practices with Windham, pinned Hill in the second period.
