From the Journal Tribune: “Well drillers began churning deep into the earth Thursday, drilling 1,600 feet into the ground on the front lawn of York County Courthouse, part of the process for a new geothermal heating and cooling plant for the court building. Earlier this fall workers from W.H. Demmons, the Portland company installing the system, started the process of drilling holes into the walls of the court building. Eventually the project will come together, and has a tentative start-up date of May 1, 2007.”

50 years ago

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “Elmer Hutchins, 55, former police chief of Wells, is making a new life for himself and his family since his sudden dismissal, without a publicly-stated reason, as head of this town’s police department on Oct. 11. Hutchins has accepted a job with Kenneth Grant, a contractor closing up homes in Kennebunkport and Kennebunk Beach and doing general maintenance work. ”

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “Fire at an early hour this morning destroyed the famous old Nutter residence on Nutter Street in Pleasantdale. This old building, which was built over 50 years ago at the cost of $14,000, was once the most palatial of that section of the county, and the social activities of the community centered there.”
