PITTSFIELD – A family was out of state when fire and smoke tore through its home off Route 100 early Easter morning.
The house, at 949 Main St., sustained heavy damage inside and is probably a total loss, according to the brother of the house’s owner, who lives next door. No one was injured.
About 10:30 a.m. Sunday, the house’s windows were broken, revealing a charred interior.
“The inside is probably wiped out,” said Jason Westgate, as he looked over at his brother’s home Sunday morning. “Between the fire and water damage, it’s probably a total loss.”
The house is owned by Michael Westgate, who lived there with his girlfriend and his 13-year-old son, Jason Westgate said.
The teenager had been spending his April school vacation at his grandmother’s home in Massachusetts, and Michael Westgate had driven down to pick him up. The family was scheduled to return later Sunday.
Jason Westgate owns land around his brother’s home.
Another neighbor reported the fire at 5:42 a.m. Pittsfield firefighters got there about 10 minutes later and were soon joined by Burnham, Detroit and Newport fire crews, according to dispatch logs.
“It was full of smoke, more smoke than fire,” Westgate said. “I couldn’t see much.”
Firefighters were there for about two hours, according to dispatch logs.
Pittsfield Fire Department Capt. Mike Havey said about 30 firefighters battled the blaze and had it under control after a half-hour.
Havey said the cause is undetermined and the state Fire Marshal’s Office will be investigating today. Jason Westgate, however, said the fire probably started from an electrical malfunction down in the cellar, citing the initial observations of firefighters on the scene.
Jason Westgate said his brother and family will probably stay inside a camper on their property while they figure out what to do with the home, which is insured.
