YORK COUNTY — Communities across the country will honor the nation’s heroes this weekend, with Veterans Day falling on Friday. Several organization and municipalities across York County will also hold events to commemorate those who have served or who currently serve.

All events are on Veterans Day unless noted otherwise.

Biddeford and Saco 

  • The Twin Cities will host a joint parade on Veterans Day to honor the sacrifices of those who have served in the nation’s armed forces. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. with a brief ceremony at Eastman park in Saco before proceding through Biddeford’s Main Street to Alfred Street, where it will conclude with a closing ceremony at Veteran’s Memorial Park. The parade will be dedicated to Jake Mulligan, a U.S. Navy veteran and member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, who died on Oct. 29, 2016. 
  • Through Saturday, AMVETS Post 1 in Biddeford will be offering free membership to veterans who are new to the organization. 

Old Orchard Beach 

  • A flag raising ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. in Veterans Memorial Park, at the corner of First and Heath streets.

Arundel

  • The Arundel Historical Society will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Fire Station, 401 Limerick Road. Yellow roses will be laid on separate plaques honoring each branch of the armed forces.

Wells 

  • The Wells Chamber of Commerce is holding its third-annual Veterans Day 5K on Saturday. The race starts at the Wells Elks Lodge, 356 Bald Hill Road. Proceeds will benefit Honor Flight Maine. Those who wish to participate or sponsor a runner can find more information at wellschamber.org.

Sanford

  • On Veterans Day, veterans’ groups will lay wreaths at the memorial in Central Park. The groups will then make their way to Springvale, where they will lay a wreath at the memorial at the Gazebo near Springvale square. There will be a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at Sanford Veterans Memorial Gymnasium, 678 Main St.

Newfield

  • The Newfield Historical Society will present its Veterans Day program beginnin at 11 a.m. in front of the Town Office and library on Route 11, and will feature recently-retired U.S. Air Force B-1 pilot Jen Fulmer as guest speaker. Fulmer flew 90 combat missions supporting troops on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq. The program also includes a flag raising by the Boy Scouts. All are welcome to the event. Refreshments will be served in the library following the program.
