Isaac Horst helps a group of people lift a large block of ice out of Mill Pond at 19th Century Willowbrook Village in Newfield on Saturday during an ice harvesting demonstration. The hands-on demonstration was made possible in part by the Curran Homestead Living History Farm and Museum, which contributed some of the old-fashioned tools that were used to harvest ice in this once-dominant Maine industry. Dr. Robert Schmick, director of Willowbrook, said the ice that was harvested in the early 20th century would be shipped nationally so that people could stock their ice boxes and keep food cold.
