AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine Gov. Paul LePage is continuing to press lawmakers to support his proposals to overhaul the state’s welfare programs.
The Republican governor’s administration will hold a press conference Monday to advocate for its measure to ban the use of electronic benefit cards outside of Maine.
The administration says EBT cards are being used in all 50 states but some have questioned whether an out-of-state ban on cards is feasible.
The Health and Human Services Committee supported an amended version of the bill last week directing the state to study the out-of-state use of EBT cards instead.
Democratic Rep. Drew Gattine of Westbrook says if the administration believes there’s a problem it should investigate the fraud, instead of cutting off the use of cards for everyone.
