GORHAM — The Scarborough track and field team swept the Class A State Championships on Monday at the University of Southern Maine, as both the boys and girls squads took home first place.

Although the Red Storm dominated much of the day, a handful of other schools and athletes made their mark on the state’s biggest stage.

Thornton Academy had a solid outing, as the girls side completed a third-place finish while Mia Taranko won the girls long jump. The boys also put on a show, placing fourth which was their highest finish since 2008.

TA girls coach Lisa Huntress was proud of her team’s outing, and was impressed with the younger Trojans throughout the year.

“We’re young, and this was a developmental year. We figured we would sit and wait and see how ready we would be for outdoors, but we came in and finished even better than we expected,” said Huntress. “This team is all business — when we’re practicing we’re practicing. I always feel that they understand the value of the time we have together and they’re consistent.”

TA boys coach George Mendros was also happy with his team, and hopes that Monday’s finish will help carry some momentum into the spring season.

“I was very pleased — we had some excellent performances. We had three second place’s so we did pretty well. Our younger kids have definitely come along well, we’re looking good for the future,” said Mendros. “We have some good momentum for the spring, we will pick up some athletes from other sports and it will be a good group.”

Massabesic also had an impressive day on both sides as the boys placed in the top-24 for the first time ever, and the girls finished 11th, which was also the highest finish in school history.

“I’m really proud of the team overall — it’s the highest-scoring meet we’ve had. As far as my performance I am pretty glad … when I went for the triple jump I wasn’t even supposed to place so that was exciting for me, and the high jump was the peak of my season,” said Massabesic’s Moriah Biener, who broke the school record for the triple jump.

Massabesic coach Dillon Bates was proud of his team’s efforts on Monday as well.

“Outside of a state championship this is the best thing we could have asked for, these kids have worked really hard and they deserve it,” said Bates.

Girls

Kennebunk’s Louise Holway finished second in the mile, while TA’s Sam Curran placed second in the shot put.

Biddeford’s Serena Speight took home third in the 200, while Holway also grabbed third in the 2 mile. Biener would take home third place in the high jump as well as the triple jump, while TA’s Abigail Cook finished third in the shot put.

TA’s Allie Gross later took home fourth place in the high jump, while teammate Isabella Capozzi finished fifth in the shot put. Biddeford’s Leia Dorais also placed fifth in the mile, while Massabesic’s Kylie Johnson took home sixth.

Boys

TA’s Jabari Washington finished second in the 55, while teammate Jason Montano placed second in shot put, and Longhao Chen second in the long jump.

TA’s Travis Snyder also shined, taking home fifth in the 55 hurdles and third in the pole vault.

Massabesic’s Alex Swett finished sixth in the 2 mile.
