THORNTON 4, CHEVERUS 1
SACO — Thornton Academy won four of five matches in straight sets to top Cheverus 4-1 in an SMAA boys tennis match on Wednesday.
Victor Menezes held on in the second set against George Bordi to win the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 7-5, while Jared Waterhouse eased to a 6-3, 6-2 victory in No. 3 singles.
The Thornton doubles tandems of Will Caras and Eric Gooch, and Dylan Gooch and Simon Belliveau, both won their matches in straight sets.
David Parran nearly completed the sweep in the No. 2 singles match, but dropped the final two sets after winning the opening set 6-1.
The Trojans are now 5-0 to start the season, and handed the Stags (4-1) their first loss.
BIDDEFORD 3, GORHAM 2
BIDDEFORD — Kenney Reyes in No. 2 singles and the tandem of Will Durkin and Adam Michel both won three-set matches to push Biddeford past Gorham 3-2 in an SMAA boys tennis match at the May Street Tennis Courts on Wednesday.
Ashton Collins bested Gorham’s Joseph Martin in straight sets ”“ thanks to a 7-5 second set tiebreaker ”“ to give the Tigers the final point of the match.
Girls Tennis
WINDHAM 5, SANFORD 0
WINDHAM — The host Eagles swept all five matches in straight sets as Windham topped Sanford 5-0 in an SMAA girls tennis match that paired two teams that entered the match with 2-1 records.
Both Misa Mai and Paige Tranchemontagne, in No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively, battled for the Spartans (2-2) in their matches with 3-6 first sets before falling in straight sets.
Windham (3-1) owned the other matches, dropping a combined two games between the three contests.
CAPE ELIZABETH 5, KENNEBUNK 0
KENNEBUNK — Visiting Cape Elizabeth had no problem feeling at home against host Kennebunk in a Western Maine Conference girls tennis match on Wednesday, as the Capers dropped just two games among four contested matches to sweep the Rams 5-0.
Laura Haddad in No. 1 singles was the lone player for the Rams (0-5) to win a point, as she showed some resistance in the second set of a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Olivia Clifford.
The Capers won three other matches 6-0, 6-0.
