KENNEBUNK — The Middle School of the Kennebunks Social Studies Department has invited the public to its annual National Geographic Geography Bee finals on Wednesday, Jan. 16 in the MSK cafeteria.

The evening begins with refreshments and audience participation at 6:30 p.m. with the 11 finalists competing at 7 p.m. This is the 31st year that students from the Middle School of the Kennebunks have participated in the Bee.

In December students in all classrooms participated in classroom rounds.  The top 60 scorers from these rounds advanced to a school semi-final from which 11 finalists were identified.

The National Geographic GeoBee is for students in the fourth through eighth grades. Thousands of schools are competing in this year’s contest from all across the United States and the five U.S. territories. Also competing are Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world.
The champion of the MSK GeoBee will advance to the next level of competition, a qualifying test to determine state competitors. Up to 100 of the top test scorers in each state become eligible to compete in their State GeoBee.

The winners of the State GeoBees receive an all-expenses-paid trip to National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., in May to participate in the GeoBee national championship, competing for cash prizes, scholarships and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour ll.

The National Geographic Society developed the National Geographic GeoBee in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. Over more than three decades, 120 million students have participated in the GeoBee.
