SANFORD — A 10-mile road race set for Sept. 6 has been canceled because not enough people had pre-registered.
That’s the word from Sanford Parks and Recreation Director Marcel Blouin.
“We were anticipating 150 runners,” said Blouin. “We got 10 pre-registrations.”
He said there appear to be a number of races that weekend, which may account for the lack of registrants.
The event was to benefit the police cadet program, which relies on donations and proceeds from events like bake sales and a recent comedy show, now that a grant that had helped defray the cost of student uniforms and more has expired. About 40 young people take part in the cadet program annually.
Blouin said there are ideas in the works for next year.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
