BIDDEFORD TIGERS

Coach: Caitlin Albert (first year)

Last year’s results: 7-8, lost in Western Class A preliminary round

Key returning players: seniors, Marisa Heffernan (goalie), Jess Laverriere (back), Katie Letellier (midfield), Mallory Mourmouras (forward), Abbie Paquette (midfield), Sophanny Srey (forward); juniors, Taylor Turgeon (forward), Charlotte White (forward); sophomore Amber Magnant (midfield)

Coach’s outlook: “This team is returning eight starters from last year. They are a solid group who has been playing together for three years now so the expectations are a bit higher this season. We made playoffs for the first time in six years last year and we hope to surpass that achievement and finish high enough in Heals to host.

“Our numbers were fairly low comparative to prior seasons so we really want to set a mark on this season and increase popularity in the community, especially for those athletes coming up. We would like to gain a couple of wins from those the teams in our conference with a great reputation of winning like Thornton, Massabesic, Scarborough, Marshwood and Cheverus.”

Coach’s outlook: “We will be very young this year, but they are ready to go, work hard and soak up anything the experienced players and coaches share with them. It will be interesting to see how the team gels, and progresses through the season. I am hopeful that we’ll be back in the playoff hunt again.”

OLD ORCHARD BEACH SEAGULLS

Coach: Shauna Regan (first year)

Last year’s results: No team

Key players: seniors, Emilie Chard (midfield), Mackenzie Rague (forward); junior Jenny Cobb (goalie)

Coach’s outlook: “We had to make a hard decision last season. Without enough girls to field a team, we had but no choice to bow out of the Class C schedule in hopes of trying again next year and we are back. Captains Mackenzie Rague and Emilie Chard will be our leaders, while Jenny Cobb will be directing from the cage. This is young team made up of 17 girls, nine of them only being freshmen, but they have been working extremely hard during the preseason. We hope to bring back the dedication and pride to the program. The goal is to make the playoffs.”

THORNTON ACADEMY GOLDEN TROJANS

Coach: Lori Smith (13th year)

Last year’s results: 11-4, lost in Western Class A preliminary round

Key returning players: seniors, Ashley Houp (forward), Karaghan Curran (midfield), Carli Legere (midfield), Francesca Petrucci (back), Liz Provencher (midfield), Allie Romprey (forward) Dorina Sirois (midfield); juniors, Grace Pickering (midfield), Libby Pomerleau (forward); sophomore Isabella Capozzi (goalie)

Key newcomers: sophomores, Grace Decker (back), Emma Dutremble (back)

Coach’s outlook: “Although we graduated all-state players Lauren Russell and Morgan Dube who accounted for much of our scoring over the past few years, I don’t think this is a down year. We return a veteran midfield of two and three-year varsity returners and a core of six other returners who are ready to step into the holes left by graduation. Aspirations are high for this team, but we know they have a lot of hard work ahead of them and will take the season one game at a time. Last year’s defense, led by graduated seniors Lauren Boissonnault and Gabrielle Capozzi only allowed eight goals in the regular season; this year’s version of the defense will be comprised mostly of rookies who will need to mature quickly in order to ensure success.”

Coach’s outlook: “Although the team is especially young this year, we have a lot of potential; the girls come to practice every day ready to learn and willing to try new things. We have a seemingly strong midfield, with speed across the board. We’re looking forward to a great season as we strive for a winning record and a seat in the playoffs.”
