SANFORD — As part of Hunger Action Month, a Grandparent’s Day 5K, 1 Mile Walk and Kid’s Fun Run will be held Sunday.

The event will take place on trails and wooded back roads at the Sanford/Springvale YMCA at 1 Emile LeVasseur Drive in Springvale. A free kids fun run will begin at 8:30 a.m. The 5K run will start at 9 a.m., with the 1 mile walk starting at 9:10 a.m.

The event is organized through Partners for a Hunger-Free York County, Partners for Healthier Communities, the Sanford/Springvale YMCA, Southern Maine Agency on Aging and the York District Public Health Council.

The event aims to raise awareness and community funding around hunger and malnutrition ”“ especially for senior citizens. All proceeds from the run and walk will go directly to senior food programs.

Shirts for those running the 5K feature the signature orange of Hunger Awareness Month, and underscore solidarity with other anti-hunger events going on around the country during the month of September.

Feeding America, a national anti-hunger organization, has called for September to be Hunger Action Month across the country. Groups around the nation are organizing special events and using the campaign’s orange theme to raise awareness about the fact that 1 in 6 Americans are currently considered “food insecure.”
