BIDDEFORD — Fiber Materials Inc. recently announced its annual award of the Margaret Chase Scholarship Fund for 2014-15 to a student in the University of Maine System, whose parent is employed at FMI, and this year’s recipient is Andrew Mowatt.

He is a first-time award winner and has recently entered his second year at the University of Southern Maine at Portland/Gorham, where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a concentration/minor in coaching.

Mowatt is the son of David and Sherry Mowatt of Buxton. He is a graduate of Bonny Eagle High School, and was active in intramural sports and the Hollis Recreational basketball program.

Over the years, Mowatt has contributed his time and talent to the Hollis Recreational Department, volunteering through different programs, which included baseball, basketball refereeing and soccer programs, including the after-care program. He said he enjoyed the time spent with the other volunteers and employees as well as the children.

FMI’s Margaret Chase Scholarship Fund award was established for students entering the University of Maine educational system. It is presented in the name of former U.S. Sen. Margaret Chase Smith, whose lifetime contributions to education and leadership personify the spirit and intent of this scholarship award. The recipient selection is based on scholastic abilities, extracurricular activities and community involvement.
