The fifth annual King of the Mat youth wrestling tournament was held at Thornton Academy on Saturday, March 2. This year’s tournament featured 520 wrestlers, which is up from the 140 athletes that competed in the first-ever event. The 2019 King of the Mat featured 70 different teams from all across New England. Individual champions received huge trophies that stand four-feet tall. After each division — Bantam, Intermediate, Novice, Middle School — are finished with their brackets, there are four “belt matches” that feature the two wrestlers with the three fastest pins on the day. This year’s King of the Mat belt winners were Doughboy Wrestling’s Jude Correa (Middle School), Little Lynx’s Cole Albert (Novice), MarcAurele, Connecticut’s Isaiah McDaniel (Intermediate) and Dungeon’s Marc Nantel (Bantam).
