May was “Bloom into Books” month at Sanford’s pubic schools. To mark the wrap-up of the occasion, students gathered at Sanford Veterans Memorial Gym Tuesday for a celebration. As well as being cheered for their participation in the program, the youngsters also had a raffle chance to win a bicycle, courtesy of York County Federal Credit Union/ A number of youngsters won gift certificates, supplied by Andrews Milligan Real Estate Co., they could use to shop at the book fair following the event. Winning a bicycle and helmet were, from left, Adriana Whitehead from grade two; Jaelynn Howard, grade three; Hazel Bouchard, grade four; Rileigh Crocker, grade five and Lamar Amoakohene, also a grade five student. Reading specialist Deb Andrews said Books into Bloom, a nightly reading program, helps keep kids motivated about reading — something educators hope they’ll continue to do during the summer break.
