BIDDEFORD — The University of New England Lacrosse team is set to face off against Roger Williams ay 4 p.m. Saturday on the UNE blue turf field and for Nor’Easter senior Alec Beveridge, the matchup represents a bittersweet reflection of his career as a college athlete.

Beveridge, a senior marine science major and Dean’s List student athlete, has played for the UNE Nor’easters lacrosse team for four years. He arrived at the university as a transfer student after attending one semester at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island.

Beveridge said that he initially chose Roger Williams for its exceptional marine science program and Division 3 athletic programs, but had second thoughts about the university and soon looked for a better fit.

“I began to look at other schools and soon fell in love with UNE due to its location on the ocean and its academic and athletic reputation,” Beveridge said. “Once I made the switch halfway through my freshman year, I immediately felt at home and knew I had made the right decision.”

Lacrosse has played a significant role in his life since the time he was little, but his passion for the sport drives him to continue to grow.

“What I enjoy most about the sport of lacrosse is the amount of creativity and complexity that is implemented into the game,” he said. “I have been playing lacrosse since I was 10-years-old and even today as a senior here at UNE, I am still learning something new about the game every day.”

This season is especially important to Beveridge, a midfielder from Arrowsic, Maine, and the rest of his senior teammates as it marks the end of their collegiate careers.

“Lacrosse has had such a positive influence on my life in so many ways, through the fun and excitement of the game and the lifelong friendships I have acquired over the years, it will be extremely difficult for me to end my lacrosse career this coming May.”

While there have been a number of hard times, there has also been moments that Beveridge dreamed of when he was young and will remember for the rest of his life.

“Ever since I was young, my dream was to play in college and since reaching this goal, every moment out on the field, in the locker room, or on the team bus heading to a game, has been such an amazing experience.”

For Beveridge, this matchup against Roger Williams marks a reflection of his college experience as a whole and he hopes to come away with a win against his former school as his final season wraps up.

The UNE Nor’easters currently have a record of 5-6 and have six remaining games as they hope to finish off their season strong.

Saturday’s game will be played in honor of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s Vs. Cancer program whose purpose is to raise both awareness and funds for local children dealing with cancer.
