Editor,

Do you love oceans, whales and exercise?

If you do, please join the Planeteers of Southern Maine on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. until noon for a “Plogging Event:”running or walking while picking up litter, particularly plastics.

We will begin at Rotary Park on Water Street in Kennebunk. Participants may groups or go as individuals to gather all the litter they can find, then return to Rotary Park before noon where the Planeteers will weigh and sort what was collected.

What is Plogging?

Plogga, or Plogging, started in Sweden and is now a movement followed by people all over the world with the same goal in mind: to live and exercise in a clean world. The word comes from the Swedish words “picking up” garbage and “jogging” mixed into one. Plocka (pick up) + jogga (jog) = plogga. This is exactly what Plogga is – picking up garbage on the streets or trails while getting exercise. Plogging can be done while on a bike ride, pushing a stroller, taking a walk or a run, and even while canoeing/kayaking or any other outdoor activity.

We are adding this event to our regular Beach Clean-Ups to catch the plastics and litter before it reaches the oceans. Trash left on roadsides, parking lots, streets etc. eventually finds its way to our streams, rivers and oceans causing multiple issues with aquatic wildlife. Experts agree there is so much plastic in our oceans and rivers today that even human bodies have small amounts of plastic molecules in our blood and tissues. Whales, fish, turtles and the smallest of living organisms have been contaminated with plastics particles. Join us for this event and help reduce pollution in our streets, drains and waterways.

We can supply gloves and bags, but if you can bring your own all the better. Prizes for the most trash collected will be awarded. All ages are welcome.
