WINSLOW (AP) — A former bookkeeper for Winslow’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the post’s Ladies Auxiliary has been accused of stealing more than $9,000 from the organizations.
Police say 34-year-old Cara Bird misappropriated more than $7,700 from the VFW and $1,500 from the Ladies Auxiliary while serving as bookkeeper from 2011 until last year.
The Morning Sentinel reports that last June, Bird signed a promissory note agreeing to repay the money taken from the VFW, plus interest. In the note, Bird ackowledges having misappropriated “monies for my own personal use.”
But a lawyer for the post says she has failed to pay back the money as promised.
She faces a criminal charge of theft for the money missing from the auxiliary.
