SACO — The first Krispy Kreme in Maine is tentatively scheduled to open on Sept. 19.

The cafe-style doughnut shop will be located at a former Burger King at 520 Main St.

Work to remodel the former burger joint began in the spring, and owner Cort Mendez said that over the next few weeks there will be dramatic transformation to the building.

“It’s coming together and taking shape,” he said.

Mendez said he’s hoping to open on Tuesday, Sept. 19 around 6 a.m., with prizes for those at the beginning of the line. Mendez said there will be a DJ in the parking lot and fun events for doughnut aficionados who chose to “camp out” the night before the opening.

Camping out before the opening of a new Krispy Kreme is not unusual, according to news reports across the country.

The Denver Post reported last year that nearly 200 people lined up for a 5 a.m. opening of a new Krispy Kreme restaurant, with the first person showing up at 11:15 the night before.

The Saco location will be the first Krispy Kreme doughnut shop in Maine. Construction on another Krispy Kreme shop begins later this month in Auburn.

The York County CareerCenter has posted that Krispy Kreme will be recruiting at its upcoming job fair from 1-4 p.m., Aug. 28, 9 Bodwell Court, Springvale, and is advertising 50-60 jobs are available at the doughnut shop.

Mendez said a manager and assistant manager have already been hired and are in training. He said of the nearly 60 more jobs available, about half of those are full-time.

Mendez, who formerly owned a number of 5 Guys restaurants, said creating a good work environment is key to retaining employees and keeping them engaged. He said he sat down with the state commissioner of labor to discuss what  job seekers are looking for in employment. He said benefits for full-time employees will include health and dental insurance, college loan assistance and 401(K) Savings Plan. Other benefits include staff social events and incentive programs for good performance.
