KENNEBUNK — The Brick Store Museum is celebrating the town’s history during the upcoming Kennebunk Heritage and Culture Festival, with a wide range of activities taking place from July 11 through July 14.
This festival is the first of it’s kind, and one the museum hopes to make an annual tradition.
The festivities begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 11 with a Lobster Bake and Wabanaki haute couture fashion display at the Museum at 117 Main St., Kennebunk. Advance tickets are available for purchase at the museum. On display Thursday will be clothing from Decontie and Brown , a fashion studio from Bangor that creates trendsetting designs that reflect their Wabnaki heritage.
“It’s kind of neat to see that blend come together,” said Brick Store Museum Director Cynthia Walker.
Friday night, July 12, the museum will present Art Night, it’s a free monthly event which on July 12 will include the opening of a new contemporary exhibition, “Painting the Light in Maine,” by Ken Fellows and a free comic book workshop by All Hands Collective.
Saturday and Sunday, events will focus on the town’s history and culture. There will be a free Classic Field Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will feature the 3rd Maine Regiment reenactors, activities and craft making. There will also be local vendors and food for sale.
“It’s a free, family-fun day,” said Walker.
Saturday afternoon, July 13, there will be a Historic Garden Party at the George Lord House on Summer Street. Tickets will be sold in advance and event goers will get a chance to explore a fully-restored 1875 home and enjoy small bites and beverages on the back lawn.
Sunday, July 14, features the History Mystery Tour from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets for this unique tour can be purchased on the day of the event. Participants start at the museum where they will receive a map of eight locations that will not be announced until the day of the event. After receiving the map, participants will visit the sites, where museum guides will be on hand to provide information about the history of the locations.
“It will be kind of a fun way to learn about places we drive past every day,” said Walker.
Also on Sunday, there will be a “handwriting yoga” event, which will feature cursive writing in a relaxed atmosphere.
