CORNISH — Ever wanted to chat with a Maine Warden, face to face? How about a member of the Marine Patrol? Feel like shaking the hand of the York County Sheriff’s deputy who came to your aid or the local fire and emergency medical technicians who put out the fire at your house or got you safely to hospital?

You can do that, see a LifeFlight helicopter, watch a Maine State Police K9 demonstration and check out York County Emergency Management Agency’s drone and more on Saturday in the parking lot of Call’s Shop ‘n Save, 200 Maple St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at First Responders Appreciation Day.

Folks can get their blood pressure  checked as well as can take their old, unwanted prescription drugs for disposal.

In addition, there will be police, fire and rescue vehicles to see, and representatives from Sacopee Valley Health Center will be on hand along with Maine State Police and others.

If you’re hungry, you can take advantage of the El Camino Fresh Mexican Grill mobile food stand.

The First Responders Appreciation Day came about when York County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Solomon and  Mark Call, who owns Call’s Shop ‘n Save, started chatting some time ago.

“I’ve been talking to Jason and I’m a huge supporter of law enforcement,” said Call, a former deputy game warden and former patrol deputy. “Lots of times police get a bad rap on social media. All of these first responders are there for us avery day. This gives folks an opportunity to thank them and shake their hand.”

“This is what community policing means,” said Solomon.”A business owner and deputy working together, working to educate the population.”

“I thought it was a great idea,” said Sheriff William King. He pointed out that the sheriff’s office had hosted the drug take back event at a Cornish pharmacy for the last several years. This year, it has been moved to the First Responders Appreciation Day.

Call pointed out that many of the agencies have job openings and the volunteer agencies are always interested in talking to those who would like to help their community.

“Most important, it is to honor all our first responders on the front lines,” Call said.

“Come out and meet us and see what we’re about,” said Solomon.
