JENKINS TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Biddeford Little League 8-10 softball All-Stars won a pair of elimination games Wednesday to advance in the East Region Invitational Tournament in Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania.
After Tuesday’s game was postponed due to rain, Biddeford opened play Wednesday afternoon with a 5-4 extra-inning win over the Pennsylvania All-Stars. Kayla Magnant scored the game-winning run on a Madison Roy sacrifice bunt in the top of the seventh. Magnant led off the inning with a walk and stole second and third before scoring. Magnant also pitched a complete game, striking out the side to end in the sixth.
Biddeford beat Massachusetts 8-1 in the nightcap, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Magnant scored the first run on a Mariah Villandry RBI. Villandry came around to score on an RBI from Roy, and Roy scored courtesy of a Maeve Donovan RBI double.
The Tigers extended their lead in the fifth on a Roy two-run double and a two-run single off of the bat of Mia Mariello. Massachusetts scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth.
Due to rules, Magnant was allowed to pitch five innings in the second game of the doubleheader. She pitched the first four innings before Roy relieved her in the fifth. Magnant, with one inning of availability still remaining, returned in the sixth to close the game and earn the save and win.
The Tigers are 5-0 in their last five elimination games, which is the spot they will find themselves in the rest of the invitational. Biddeford plays at 2 p.m. today.
