Police said man stole beer from store, resisted arrest

Police said they had to wrestle a New Hampshire man to the ground after he threatened a store clerk while trying to buy beer after hours.

Police arrested Peter Mackey, 24, of Pittsfield early Saturday after he left a Seven Eleven store in Manchester. Police said he told the clerk he had a knife when he was told it was too late to buy a 30-pack of beer.

Police said the man reached over the counter, pressing buttons on the register until the cash drawer opened, then left with the beer and the cash. No knife was displayed.

Two officers confronted Mackey and arrested him after a struggle. He was charged with robbery and resisting arrest.

Cellphone-cloning suspect in custody of federal agents

A New York man wanted by the U.S. Secret Service for his alleged role in a multimillion-dollar cellphone-cloning scam has been turned over to federal agents after a state court hearing in Massachusetts.

Police in Peabody said they pulled over an SUV just before 3 a.m. Saturday. They said 30-year-old Miguel Argenys Jesurum was driving, but tried to switch places with a female passenger. Police said he appeared nervous, gave officers a false name and did not have a driver’s license. Fingerprinting at the station determined his real identity.

Authorities said Jesurum is allegedly part of a ring that stole information from cellphone accounts and used it to create a black market in international calls.

State traffic charges were dropped Monday and Jesurum was turned over to the Secret Service.

Bill would stop parents from impeding child vaccinations

A bill moving through the Vermont Legislature would end the ability of parents to block on philosophical grounds the vaccinations their children must receive to enter school.

The Valley News of Lebanon, N.H., reported the bill is drawing fire from some parents who said it’s discriminatory. Some also object to forcing their children to get shots that they fear include toxins. Others said removing the philosophical objection while retaining a religious exemption common to most states would be unfair.

But the state Department of Health supports the proposed change, noting that Vermont has the second-highest rate of non-immunized children in the country.
