NEW YORK – Cashmere Wright banked in a runner with 7.6 seconds left, and Cincinnati beat No. 13 Georgetown in double overtime 72-70 on Thursday in the Big East tournament.
The Bearcats trailed by 11 midway through the second half of the quarterfinal but rallied behind Yancy Gates, who scored 23 points in his back-and-forth big man duel with Henry Sims.
Gates scored twice in the last 2 minutes of regulation to give the Bearcats their first lead since midway through the first half. The Hoyas’ Otto Porter sent the game to overtime when his jumper bounced in with 3.6 seconds remaining.
Sims, who had 22 points and 15 rebounds, hit a layup at the buzzer to force a second OT for the Hoyas (23-8).
The Bearcats (23-9), seeded fourth, face second-ranked Syracuse in today’s semifinals.
(2) SYRACUSE 58, CONNECTICUT 53: Dion Waiters had 18 points and James Southerland scored all 10 of his points in the final 8 minutes to lead No. 2 Syracuse past Connecticut in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament, snapping the Huskies’ 13-game postseason winning streak.
The top-seeded Orange (31-1) won their 11th straight game.
(3) KANSAS 83, TEXAS A&M 66: Elijah Johnson scored a career-high 26 points, and No. 3 Kansas (27-5) began pursuit of its third straight Big 12 tournament title with a win over Texas A&M in the quarterfinals at Kansas City, Mo.
Kansas will play No. 12 Baylor today.
(5) MISSOURI 88, OKLAHOMA STATE 70: Kim English scored 27 points and Missouri swamped Oklahoma State in the Big 12 quarterfinals at Kansas City Mo.
LOUISVILLE 84, (9) MARQUETTE 71: Kyle Kuric scored 20 points, Peyton Siva added 18 and Louisville forced Marquette into a season-high 26 turnovers, advancing to the Big East tourney semifinals at New York.
(12) BAYLOR 82, KANSAS STATE 74: Perry Jones III scored a career-high 31 points, hitting 11 of 14 shots, and powered No. 12 Baylor (26-6) past Kansas State in the Big 12 tourney at Kansas City, Mo.
(15) INDIANA 75, PENN STATE 58: Jordan Hulls scored 20 points to help Indiana (25-7) pull away from Penn State in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.
(18) SAN DIEGO STATE 65, BOISE STATE 62: Jamaal Franklin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give top-seeded San Diego State a win over No. 8 seed Boise State in the Mountain West Conference tourney opener at Las Vegas.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
(1) BAYLOR 72, TEXAS TECH 42: Odyssey Sims scored 18 points and Brittney Griner had 15 points, nine rebounds and five blocks to power Baylor over Texas Tech in the quarterfinals of the tournament at Kansas City, Mo. The Bears (32-0) move into today’s semifinal against Kansas State.
(2) STANFORD 76, WASHINGTON 57: Nnemkadi Ogwumike scored 18 points to help Stanford beat Washington and advance to the semifinals of the Pac-12 tourney at Los Angeles.
MEN’S LACROSSE
SOUTHERN MAINE 15, ST. JOSEPH’S 4: Mark White and Nate Prince each had five goals as the Huskies (1-1) handled the Monks (1-2) at Portland.
White scored the first three goals to help the Huskies to a 5-0 lead.
SKIING
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Avril Dunleavy of Bates finished 23rd in the giant slalom at the NCAA championships at Bridger Bowl in Bozeman, Mont.
Dunleavy tied with Montana State’s Stephanie Irwin, finishing with a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 44.41 seconds.
Other competitors from Maine schools included: Cassady Roberts of Colby, 1:44.78 (29th); Natalie Biedermann of Colby, 1:46.24 (31st) and Emily Hayes of Bates, 1:47.55 (34th).
In the men’s giant slalom, Colby’s Jim Ryan led skiers from Maine schools, finishing tied with Paul Atkinson of the University of New Hampshire for 18th with a time of 1:34.29. Alex Jones of Bates was 28th in 1:36.14.
The Nordic classical takes place today and the slalom on Saturday.
