Libby, Coulombe among six finalists for Mr. and Miss Basketball awards
Alexa Coulombe of McAuley and Cole Libby of Bonny Eagle are among the six finalists for the Mr. and Miss Basketball awards, given to the state’s best senior basketball players.
The winners will be announced Friday as part of the Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star awards banquet at Husson University in Bangor.
The other finalists for Miss Maine Basketball are Mia Diplock of Cony and Meghan Gribbin of Windham. Christian McCue of Hampden Academy and Cam Sennick of Mt. Blue join Libby as Mr. Basketball finalists.
TRAVIS ROY AWARD: Defenseman Taylor Reuillard of Biddeford, forward Ned Richard of Kennebunk, defenseman Ryan Johnston of Scarborough and forward C.J. Maksut of Thornton Academy are among eight semifinalists for the Travis Roy Award, presented to the best Class A senior boys’ hockey player in Maine.
The semifinalists from Eastern Class A are goalie Chris Howat of Bangor, defenseman Brandon Tiner of Lewiston, forward Spencer Martin of St. Dominic in Auburn and forward J.T. Whitten of Waterville.
The award will be presented March 18 at the coaches’ association banquet at the Ramada Inn in Lewiston.
WRESTLING: Nine Mainers advanced to the quarterfinals of the New England championships at Providence, R.I.
Remaining in the championship round were Conor Sheehan of Fryeburg Academy in the 113-pound weight class, Zach Sheehan of Fryeburg at 120, Ethan Gilman of Massabesic at 125, Jordan Howarth of Marshwood at 130, Brent Waterman of Belfast at 130, Danny DelGallo of Gardiner at 135, Jared Jensen of Brunswick at 152, Josh Andrews of Massabesic at 220, and unbeaten Rhett Chase of Camden Hills at 220.
GOLF
PGA: Justin Rose shot a second straight 4-under 66 and moved into a share of the lead with Tom Gillis midway through the Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Rory McIlroy, birdied three of his last five holes and was at 7 under along with Dicky Pride.
Tiger Woods had a wild round that included a tee shot off a spectator and another into the water. He finished with a 68 and was seven shots back.
PREP SCHOOLS
BOYS’ BASKETBALL: Hebron Academy advanced to the NEPSAC Class C championship game for the first time by beating Providence (R.I.) Country Day School 75-64 at Byfield, Mass.
The Lumberjacks will travel to Avon, Conn., on Sunday to play Hyde of Connecticut.
Xavier Bernard scored 19 points, Dennis Ross of Portland and Shaquille Cezont-Holmes each had 18 points, and Mario Onoh finished with 13 for Hebron.
TENNIS
DUBAI CHAMPIONSHIPS: Top-ranked Novak Djokovic lost for the first time this season, beaten by Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Murray will play Roger Federer, who edged Juan Martin del Potro 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6). Federer will be going for his fifth Dubai title, but his first in five years.
DELRAY BEACH INTERNATIONAL: John Isner reached his first semifinal of the year with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bernard Tomic at Delray Beach, Fla.
SKIING
WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Olympic champion Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany mastered a melting course to win a giant slalom at Ofterschwang, Germany, and take the standings lead in the discipline.
Lindsey Vonn finished 10th and retained a massive lead in the overall standings. U.S. teammate Julia Mancuso was ninth.
MEN’S WORLD CUP: Beat Feuz of Switzerland took the overall World Cup lead, sharing first place in a super-G race at Kvitfjell, Norway, with Austrian rival Klauss Kroell.
SOCCER
ALGARVE CUP: The U.S. got goals from Abby Wambach and Sidney Leroux to beat Norway 2-1 at Lagos, Portugal.
The Americans will play Japan on Monday in a rematch of the women’s World Cup final. The U.S. needs a win or tie to qualify for the championship match.
