FALMOUTH – Falmouth took time and space from Scarborough. Right wing Ben Freeman took care of the rest.

Freeman scored three goals — one on the power play and one short-handed — to lead Falmouth to a 6-0 victory over Scarborough in a Western Class A boys’ hockey regular-season finale Thursday night at Family Ice.

“(Freeman) comes to play every night,” Coach Deron Barton said. “He’s established himself as an impact player in the league and as a leader on this team as a sophomore. We’re pretty happy with his performance.”

Freeman, who has a team-leading 19 goals for 35 points, was happy to help the Yachtsmen build a five-game win streak to close the season.

“We wanted to go in (to the playoffs) hot,” he said, “because we know we’re one of the best teams in the state and we’re rolling right now.”

Cam Bell had a goal and an assist, Mitch Tapley and Alden Weller each had two assists, Connor Jordan also had an assist and Andre Clement added a goal for the Yachtsmen (13-4-1), who likely will enter the Western Class A tournament as the No. 2 seed behind Thornton Academy. Scarborough (12-4-2) is likely to enter as the No. 3 seed.

Falmouth goalie Dane Pauls made 24 saves. Dalton Finley, Alex Cherry and Ben Bragg combined for 15 saves for Scarborough.

“We set the tempo, and we didn’t give them any time and space,” said Barton.

“We knew if we did that, they only have a handful of players that are skilled enough to hurt us.”

It was exactly the start that the Red Storm didn’t need. Coach Norm Gagne said his team was grappling with makeshift lines. With defenseman Ian Morris out with an injury, Gagne moved rugged forward Trevor Murray back to the blue line. That move threw off the rhythm of Murray’s forward line.

“Putting a young team in different positions, it’s not good. They were uncomfortable,” said Gagne. “We played like we didn’t know each other. I told them to put this one in the rearview mirror. This game wasn’t going to make any difference in (seeding for the tournament.) We’ll still stay in third, hopefully get some guys back and go from there.”
