Windham High seniors Ashley Crocker and McKayla Eskilson were announced Saturday at the South Southwesterns swimming and diving championships as winners of the final two scholarship awards from the Southern Maine Swim Officials Association.

The other eight winners were announced last weekend at the North Southwesterns. All 10 recipients will get scholarships ranging from $500 to $700.

Since 1993, more than $63,000 in scholarships have gone to graduating seniors who successfully combined academics, community service, and swimming or diving. A coach’s recommendation and a self-assessment essay are part of the application process.

“We had 40 applications this year,” said Fran Fox of the SMSOA, “and every one was qualified.”

Also at the South Southwesterns in Cape Elizabeth, the York County Swim Officials awarded five $400 scholarships to the following York County athletes: Tyler Goulden, Tyler Cadorette and Adam Madore of Thornton Academy, and Jamie Dussault and Tasia Earnest of Kennebunk.

Three youth skiers from Phippsburg were among the top finishers Feb. 5 at a biathlon competition held at Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson. Sierra Wallace was first in the girls’ division, and Kali Pierce took third. Braden Olsen placed first in the boys’ event.

Jacob Halberg, a 2011 graduate of Camden Hills Regional High School, received the Marty Higgins Award at Ithaca College’s football awards banquet on Feb. 4. The award is given to the most outstanding junior varsity player.
