SACO – Scarborough goalie Dalton Finley simply displays confidence. In the crease, with his teammates, before and after games.
Then again, confidence was a big part of Finley’s game Saturday night. He turned aside 20 shots in a 2-2 tie with Biddeford in a Western Class A game at MHG Ice Centre.
Finley came up with gems at key points, including a huge stop on Matt Jerome from point-blank range with a second left in overtime.
“I just try to stay focused and think about where other people are coming from,” said Finley after packing his gear. “I have to trust my defense and know they have my back.”
Both teams used the game to prepare for the state tournament, which starts in two weeks. Play their systems. Roll two lines of forwards, spell them with a third. If you’re big on defense (Biddeford), play that way. If you’re smaller (Scarborough), check the hands and get after that puck.
“We battled with them and this was a good step as we get ready for the playoffs,” said Scarborough Coach Norm Gagne. “At the end there, (Finley) came up with some big stops. Real big.”
Biddeford (5-7-3) used its size advantage to take control early. Nik Lemieux capped a pretty passing sequence at 6:45 of the first period for a 1-0 lead. Defenseman Taylor Reuillard snapped a cross-ice pass to Stephen Comar on the right-hand boards in the neutral zone. Comar fed a breaking Lemieux into the Scarborough zone, and Lemieux skated in alone to beat Finley.
Scarborough (11-2-2) adjusted between periods.
“We wanted to go hard at them with controlled aggression and go after the puck,” said defenseman Joe Cronin. “If we didn’t get the puck, we played the body and created turnovers. We weren’t trying to knock them over, just rub them out. We created turnovers and beat them to the puck.”
Scarborough controlled play in the second and held an 11-8 edge in shots. Trevor Murray tied it for the Red Storm on the power play at 12:32.
Biddeford came out flying in the third. Defensemen Todd Roberge, James Jamieson, Wyatt LeBlond and Reuillard reasserted themselves in front of a stellar Jon Fields (24 saves), and the Tigers began pressuring Finley again.
But Jack Rousselle slipped through to put the Red Storm ahead at 4:42 off a pretty pass from Cam Loiselle.
“Cam hit me with a great pass, I brought it to my backhand, saw that there was room up top,” Rousselle said. “I just relaxed and put it over his left shoulder.”
Biddeford tied it again on Comar’s goal at 8:14, from Jerome.
“I thought we came on in the third, did a real good job tying it up,” said Biddeford Coach Rich Reissfelder. “We battled and regained momentum. In the end, we had a few chances to win it.”
It was the Red Storm’s third straight overtime game, following a 2-1 loss at Biddeford on Jan. 28 and a 5-4 win at Brunswick on Thursday.
“At the end of the third we said, ‘Remember how it felt last time against Biddeford, getting scored on in OT,’” Rousselle said. “We didn’t want it to happen again.”
