Krystina Castella’s “Crazy About Cookies,” reviewed here a few weeks ago, was so creative, I decided to check out her most recent publication, “Crazy About Cakes: More than 150 Delectable Recipes for Every Occasion” (Sterling, $17.95).

Well, the cakes are as tempting as the cookies, although many of them look much more complicated to make. Castella starts off simply with “everyday cakes” like your basic devil’s food, and works her way up to cakes that will require more time in the kitchen – but still look fabulous.

The thing I like best is her creativity. She has en entire section on “vegetable cakes” that includes a recipe for a Jalapeno Cake with Molasses Sauce. It’s a cornbread-like pound cake that I can’t wait to try.

Castella includes the traditional holiday cakes and birthday cakes, but also includes specific ideas for birthday cakes that are appropriate for babies, toddlers and teens.

No one is left out. There’s even a section with ideas for pet birthday cakes, including a carob peanut cake that will let your dog celebrate in style without getting sick from eating chocolate.
