Legends Tour to visit Maine in June for two-day tourney at Falmouth CC
Forty of the top senior female golfers will play the Falmouth Country Club course when the Legends Tour comes to Maine for the first time for a 36-hole, two-day tournament June 21-24. A one-day pro-am and women’s and junior clinics will also be part of the tournament week.
The Legends Tour has over 100 members who have more than 600 LPGA victories and 65 major championships collectively. Past fields have included Nancy Lopez, Beth Daniel, Meg Mallon, Rosie Jones and Pat Bradley. The purse for this tournament, sponsored by Hannaford Supermarkets, is $200,000.
The First Tee of Maine and the Good Shepherd Food Bank will be among charities benefiting from ticket and sponsorship proceeds.
TENNIS
FED CUP: Venus Williams will return from illness and her sister, Serena, will play Fed Cup for the first time in nearly five years after being selected for the U.S. team that will meet Belarus in a Feb. 4-5 World Group II match at Worcester, Mass.
U.S. Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez announced the team, also containing Christina McHale and Liezel Huber.
SOCCER
MLS: The MLS All-Star game was awarded to the Philadelphia Union, who will host the event July 25 at PPL Park, located in nearby Chester along the Delaware River.
The opponent has yet to be determined, though MLS Commissioner Don Garber said that an answer should come in the next two months.
U.S. UNDER-17: Richie Williams replaced Wilmer Cabrera as coach of the U.S. Under-17 soccer team.
Williams, who made 20 appearances for the U.S. national team from 1998-02, was hired by the U.S. Soccer Federation and will oversee the under-17 residency program in Bradenton, Fla.
He had been coach of the under-18 team and was the Mid-Atlantic technical advisor for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.
SKIING
MEN’S WORLD CUP: Marcel Hirscher of Austria won a night slalom at Schladming, Austria, for his sixth victory of the season and ninth overall.
Hirscher led after the first run and finished in an aggregate time of 1 minute, 43.01 seconds to beat Stefano Gross of Italy by 0.22 seconds.
Hirscher’s Austrian teammate, Mario Matt, was 0.29 behind in third. Ted Ligety of the United States was eighth.
Overall World Cup champion Ivica Kostelic of Croatia finished fourth, 0.30 behind Hirscher, and remained at the top of the slalom and overall standings.
X GAMES: The Winter X Games will hold a tribute Thursday to honor freestyle skier Sarah Burke, who died last week from injuries suffered during a training accident.
